City of Portage, Indiana

We are a community of hard working people with a commitment to keeping our city safe, clean, and prosperous.

The Portage Police Department reserve officers volunteer their time and have proven to be a valuable asset to the Department and to the City of Portage. We now have 15 active reserve officers involved in the reserve program.. Some of the duties reserve officers perform include traffic control at parades and football and basketball games. Reserve officers have also been called upon to assist with traffic emergencies and have backed up regular officers in traffic stops. Additionally, reserve officers transport prisoners to the Porter County Jail. Each reserve officer must attend and graduate from the Indiana Law Enforcement Reserve Academy as well as a field training officer's program. Such training provides reserve officers the skills necessary to be able to assist in fingerprinting and booking prisoners. One of the reserves' greatest benefits is allowing Portage's regular police officers to be on the street fighting crime. This voluntary organization has proven to be a valuable asset to the Portage Police Department.
