Animal Control

The Animal Control Unit provides basic services:

  • Pick up stray dogs
  • Take dog bite reports
  • Respond to barking dog complaints
  • Provide City tag registration for cats and dogs (must apply in person) 

The Animal Control Unit will NOT pick up stray or feral cats. However, they will pick up distempered raccoons and injured animals. 

Additionally, for dead animals, please contact the Portage Street Department at 219-762-4564.

Impound Fees may be paid at either the Portage Police Department between 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM or the Clerk-Treasurers Office at City Hall between 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM
